Stock Market

Base

The merging of a support level and resistence level resulting in a narrow trading range.

Benchmark

A set of securities such as an index used for comparison purposes.

Beta

A measurement of risk compared to the market.

Bid/Ask Spread

The difference between the highest price a buyer is willing to pay per share and the lowest a seller is willing to accept per share.

Breath

The percentage of stocks that are advancing relative to those that are unchanged or declining.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

An agency part of the U.S. Labor Department conducting research on employment, consumer prices, and various economic data.

Debt to Equity Ratio

A company's long-term debt divided by common stockholder equity. This is an indicator of financial leverage.

Derivative Security

A financial security such as option or future contracts that derives its value from other financial securities.

Dilution

The issuing of new shares for a company which decreases the earnings per share. This represents a watering down effect of a company's profits among the shareholders.

Countercyclical Stocks

Stocks that tend to have rising prices during recessions and bear markets and falling prices during bull markets.

Coupon

The contractual interest owed to debt holders by a bond issuer.

Expense Ratio

A percentage of total assets that are managed in a mutual fund or ETF that is spent on running and operating the fund.

Float

The float for a stock is the total number of outstanding shares except shares owned by insiders and any restricted shares.

Fundamental Analysis

A type of securities analysis that focuses on the earnings, dividends, risk profile, and interest rates in determining the value of a company.

Golden Cross

A bullish signal when the 50 day moving average moves above the 200 day moving average.

Idiosyncratic Risk

Risk to a single company or risk thats uncorrelated to that of the overall market.

Insolvency Risk

The risk that a company cannot meet its debt obligations, also known as bankruptcy risk.

Moving Average

An average for an interval of time used in charting and technical analysis that shows trends by adding the newest variable while dropping the oldest variable. With stocks, this variable is usually price.

Price to Earnings Ratio (P/E)

A valuation metric that divides the current stock price by either the trailing twelve-months (TTM) earnings per share (EPS) or the forward expected earnings per share.

Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)

Investments in real estate or loans backed by real estate that can be purchased in shares.
